Khaf
– Poem by Brandon D. Hildreth –
I
an
endless
warren
a
cavern
whose
countless
limbs
swallow
children
whole
II
shucking
blamelessness,
that
larva of
innocence;
a
cicada
shell
III
how
the many
molt,
waking in
the void;
an
aquifer
of free will
IV
where
consequence
feeds
indiscriminately
upon
the
ignorant
V
few
escape
its wrath,
who
climb from
this oubliette
and peer
from its
mouth
VI
daunted,
bewildered;
squinting out
into the
dim
crepuscular
light
VII
each
one, by his
past,
tethered;
with a weighted
chain,
to the
chasm’s
depths
VIII
though;
venture
outward,
cautiously,
into the
world,
their lives
halfway
spent
IX
irons
drag abaft
every link,
an ounce
of guilt
each,
his own
blacksmith
X
whose
forbidden
fruit
has
a direful
cost
for we
sojourners
of flesh
XI
such
boundless
beauty
what
bridles tame
our dreams
from
yonder
green pastures
